Our approach to recruiting international school leaders

Every appointment is unique

Exceptional appointments are built on firm foundations: a deep understanding of the school, a realistic brief, thoughtful search and honest conversations with candidates.

Here is how we typically work with schools in the UAE and Middle East.

Understanding your school and context

We begin by listening.

We spend time with key stakeholders – Board members, Owners, school leaders, staff and, where appropriate, students and parents – to understand:

  • your culture, values and strategic priorities
  • the story of leadership in your school so far
  • what sort of experience and skills would help a candidate to land well in the role
  • what success would look like in three to five years for the appointment

These insights shape the brief, the search and the way we talk about your opportunity. We want to act as true advocates of your school and show a genuine understanding of the role and the opportunity.

Shaping and telling the story of the role

We work with you to create an appointment brief that is both attractive and honest.

Alongside the job description and person specification, we highlight:

  • the distinctive strengths and challenges of your school
  • governance, reporting lines and key relationships
  • the wider lifestyle and cultural context of the region, and your specific country or emirate

Given our team’s personal experiences of the region, we are able to communicate the reality of life and school leadership in a way that resonates with candidates and their families.

Research, market mapping and outreach

This is one of the parts we enjoy the most. We pride ourselves on a meticulous research process to identify potential candidates worldwide. This includes individuals who might not even know they are looking!

Our approach includes:

  • Creatively identifying schools and education groups where the strongest candidates are most likely to be found
  • Drawing on long-established UK and international relationships to extend the reach and depth of the search
  • Engaging in confidential conversations to understand reputation, impact and leadership readiness
  • Approaching prospective candidates discreetly and thoughtfully

While we can supplement with advertising where helpful, many of our best candidates come through targeted headhunting and recommendations rather than open applications.

Assessing fit – beyond the CV

From initial conversations onwards, we explore:

  • Motivation for a move – readiness for the distinct culture and lifestyle of the country
  • Leadership style, values and approach to working in different settings, often reporting to boards and commercial education groups
  • Track record in areas such as teaching & learning, culture, operations and growth
  • Understanding of the region and the impact on family members

We use a mix of informal discussions, structured interviews, referencing and, where appropriate, psychometric assessments. When we present a shortlist, you can be confident that every candidate is capable of leading your school and aligned with your ethos and direction.

Supporting your selection process

We tailor our involvement to your individual requirements.

Our support includes:

  • Working with you to shape a fair and rigorous selection process
  • Coordinating all aspects of interview logistics, whether in person or online
  • Preparing candidates and panel members to ensure clarity and consistency throughout the process
  • Providing clear, balanced feedback and guidance at each stage of the appointment

Our team includes a former Headteacher who understands what it feels like on both sides of the table and can support robust, humane decision-making.

We also work alongside you to ensure statutory and compliance requirements are addressed, and that the appropriate education authorities receive the necessary information.

Securing a successful appointment and transition

Once you have chosen your preferred candidate, we:

  • Take up full references and support safeguarding checks
  • Guide both parties through offer, negotiation and contract stages
  • Ensure unsuccessful candidates are treated fairly and given appropriate feedback
  • Stay in touch with you and the appointed candidate during the first months to support a positive start

Where helpful, we can provide formal onboarding coaching or wider leadership support. Our aim is not just to fill a role, but to lay the groundwork for a stable, successful appointment.

If you are considering a leadership search, we would be very happy to talk.
